How Reactive Are Alkali Metals

Physical properties of the brine metals

Grouping 1 contains elements placed in a vertical column on the far left of the periodic table . The elements in group 1 are chosen the alkali metals .

Periodic table with Group 1 metals coloured in red. Group ane is on the left-hand side of the periodic table

The brine metals share similar concrete and chemic properties .

Physical properties

The alkali metals:

  • are soft (they can be cut with a pocketknife)
  • have relatively low melting points

The alkali metals likewise have low densities . They are low enough for the first three (lithium, sodium and potassium) to float on h2o.

Question

The bar chart shows the melting points of five alkali metals. Use this information to describe how melting signal changes in grouping 1.

Bar chart of the melting points of Group 1 elements.

Going down group 1, the melting point decreases.

Question

Francium is below caesium in the periodic table. Use the information in the nautical chart to predict the melting bespeak of francium. Explain your answer.

The melting point of francium will be around 23 to 27°C. This is because francium is below caesium in the periodic table, so it should have a lower melting point, and the difference in melting bespeak decreases going from ane element to the adjacent.
